Trust Strategist and Body Language Expert: Former Undercover Police Officer & Federal Prosecuting Attorney 

Topic:  3D Interview Techniques

Imagine what it would be like to live as a different person with a different name, identity, and background. Working for months at a time with drug dealers and criminals, and your success depended on establishing trust.

That’s precisely what Pamela Barnum did for years working undercover in the Drug Enforcement Section. She learned real-world techniques for building trust and interpreting nonverbal communication (body language).

Today, she shares her expertise with others, teaching them invaluable communication skills that increase trust, improve relationships, and decode nonverbal cues.

Pamela has been a featured trust strategist and nonverbal communication expert, contributing to print media, radio, and television news programs in Canada and the United States.

Her TEDx Talk, “What Drug Dealers Taught Me About Trust,” was viewed more than 400,000 times in the first year and continues to attract praise and interest from around the world. Her 2022 TEDx talk, "How Empathy Empowered an Undercover Cop," garnered critical acclaim for her candor and insight.

Gary McAlum; Advisor - Tag Cyber LLC

 

Topic:  The World of Cyber Crime and Fraud: Stats, Trends, and Hope for the Future

Gary McAlum was recently appointed to the National Cyber Security Center (NCC) Board of Directors.  Gary retired as Senior Vice President and Chief Security Officer for United Services Automobile Association (USAA) after 11 years.  As USAA’s first Chief Security Officer, he was responsible for Information Security, Physical Security Operations, Fraud, Business Continuation, Privacy, and Corporate Investigations.

Prior to joining USAA, Gary served 25 years in the US Air Force.  Throughout his military career, he worked in a variety of leadership and staff positions within the information technology career field including: telecommunications, satellite communications, network operations, and information security. In addition, he was on the front line of military cyberspace operations where he supported the establishment and evolution of the Joint Task Force Global Network Operations, the organization that was the focal point for the operation and security of DoD information systems and networks, and precursor to the US Cyber Command. 

During this time, he was frequently called upon to provide cyber threat insights to a wide variety of interagency forums, including the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, the President’s National Cyber Study Group, and Congressional testimony. In 2016, Gary was inducted into the Air Force Cyberspace Operations and Support Hall of Fame.

Mike Sherrod; SVP Financial Crimes & Governance - Truist Financial


Topic: Fraud in Banking & Current Trends

Mike Sherrod is a Senior Vice-President in the Financial Crimes group at Truist. Mike leads the Financial Crimes Fraud Governance group. Prior to joining Truist, Mike was a Senior Director at Capital One. He led their Internal Fraud Controls program as well as developed an analytics team to detect fraud. Mike was responsible to ensure risk stakeholders across Capital One were mitigating Fraud Risk. Prior to Capital One, Mike worked for Ernst & Young (E&Y) in their Fraud Investigation practice and led the efforts in the US with respect to their Anti-Fraud Service offering.

In this role he worked with clients in various industries around the world in conducting anti-fraud program assessments, fraud risk assessments, fraud awareness trainings, and developing fraud response plans and conducting FCPA assessments. Mike also conducted significant investigations into revenue recognition. Mike started his career in public accounting conducting external financial statement audits as well as providing small business consulting for his clients.

Cancellation Policy and No Shows

  • Cancellations will not be eligible for a refund; however, substitutions will be accepted.
  • In the event an attendee does not show up to the event, the registration cost will be forfeited.  
  • The Chapter reserves the right to bar for future registration any attendees who routinely register and fail to pay and/or attend the event.
